Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dealer Protection Program?

Great Bay Rod Company is unique in the industry and we work hard to help our dealer partners prosper.  We don't have dealer partners in every state and must also sell via the internet to "fill those gaps".  To protect the shops that have partnered with, and invested in us, we have implemented the Dealer Protection Program, this revolutionary program provides our dealer partners with quarterly margin payments for any internet sale that comes directly to Great Bay Rod Company and falls within a 60 mile radius of the dealer partner that carries our rods, we credit that dealer partner with the sale and pay them their regular margin every quarter.  Everybody wins and we make sure that all of our clients (and dealer partners) are serviced to the best of our ability and with the highest level of customer service possible.

Where are your fly rods made?

All Great Bay Rods are handcrafted in the USA. We pride ourselves on our expert craftsmanship and strive for a product integrity that we feel cannot be achieved with overseas production. Great Bay Rod Company is determined to invest in America ... one rod at a time.

How long have you been in business?

Great Bay Rod Company was founded in 2004 and has been building rods for over 20 years.

How do I test cast a Great Bay Rod?

All Great Bay Rods can be test cast.  This can be done either through a local dealer partner stocking our fly rods or through our "Try Before You Buy" program that allows anglers to test cast the rods prior to purchasing.

What is static deflection testing?

Static deflection testing allows Great Bay Rod Company to precisely place guides so that stress is evenly distributed across all the guides and the rod itself.  Even with extremely tight quality control tolerances, each blank is slightly different and may require different guide placement to ensure optimal performance.

Is there a big difference between graphite and fiberglass fly rods?

Yes and no.  All rods are designed to do one thing - cast a fly with efficiency. In this sense fiberglass and graphite are the same.  There may be differences in action because of different tapers associated with the different materials, but functionally there is no difference between a graphite and a fiberglass fly rod.

What model rod should I start out with?

This is a tough question to answer. Most individuals start out with a rod that feels comfortable to them and allows them the greatest ability to feel the rod load. A beginner must also consider the type of fishing he or she plans to do i.e., freshwater or saltwater, small stream or big river. There are too many variables to discuss here, call us toll free at (877) 755-3725 and we can discuss with you in detail and help you with this decision.
